The Scout uniform is an integral and important part of the Scout program. Troop 993 requires ALL Scouts and Scouters to be properly uniformed at all Scout meetings and events and while being transported to and from events. The uniform should be worn with pride.
Troop 993 Uniform Standards
Each Scout should have a complete BSA uniform. This includes Scout pants, Scout socks, a Troop provided neckerchief and a short sleeve collared shirt with appropriate insignia properly placed on the shirt. Instructions for placing insignia can be found on the inside front and back cover of the Boy Scout Handbook. Shirt insignia include:
Right Sleeve:
U.S. Flag - The flag comes on new shirts when purchased and is sewn just below (almost touching) the shoulder seam of the right sleeve.
Patrol Emblem - The patrol patch (Cougar, Dragon, Eagle, Falcon, Wolverine, etc.) is provided by the Troop and sewn on the right sleeve just below the U.S. Flag (almost touching).
Quality Unit Emblem - When earned by the Troop, the Quality Unit patch can be worn by all Scouts on the right sleeve. It should be sewn with the top of the patch 4 inches below the shoulder seam.
Left Sleeve:
National Capitol Area Council Shoulder Emblem - This patch must be purchased and is sewn centered at the top of the left sleeve just below the shoulder seam (almost touching). It is located opposite the American flag (which is on right sleeve).
Troop 993 Unit Numbers - The Troop numerals "993" are purchased and sewn onto the left sleeve immediately below (slightly touching) the National Capitol Area Council Patch.
Junior Leadership Position Emblem - Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader and all Troop-level junior leadership position emblems are sewn immediately below the Troop numerals (slightly touching) and centered on the left sleeve.
Trained Emblems - "Trained" Emblems may be worn by all junior leaders who have completed Troop- or Council-level junior leader training courses. Scouters (adult leaders) who have completed Scoutmaster Fundamentals (indoor and outdoor) may also wear the Trained emblem. The patch is sewn immediately below (slightly touching) the leadership emblem.
Right Pocket:
Order of the Arrow Lodge Flap - Scouts elected to the Order of the Arrow (OA) by their fellow Scouts and who have successfully completed the Ordeal can wear the Lodge flap emblem. It is sewn onto the right pocket flap in such a way that it covers the flap. It should not be stitched at the bottom so that the pocket can still be buttoned and un-buttoned.
Event Patches - Scouts receive patches for a range of Scouting events such as camporees, advancement days, duty to God encampments, etc. These patches are sewn centered on the right pocket below the pocket flap. Many patches have a button loop and can be hung from the pocket button rather than sewn on.
Left Pocket:
Rank Emblem - Cloth patches for ranks from Scout to Eagle are sewn centered on the left pocket.
Arrow of Light Award - Weblos Scouts earning the Arrow of Light Award may wear the emblem centered and sewn immediately below the bottom of the left pocket.
World Crest - The world crest does not come on new uniforms, but may be worn by all Scouts and Scouters as an expression of brotherhood with all Scouts around the world. The emblem is purchased and sewn centered above the left pocket half-way between the left shoulder seam and the top of the left pocket.
Other:
Epaulets - The red epaulets are purchased and inserted around the epaulets on both shoulders. The Red epaulets are the ONLY ones Scouts are allowed to wear. They are not sewn on and should be removed for laundering.
Scout Belt - A standard Scout web belt with brass buckle should be worn by all Scouts. Leather Scout belts with appropriate buckles can be substituted.
Scout Hat - Troop 993 has no standard headgear. Either an official BSA hat, or no hat should be worn for Troop events.
