So You Hold A Leadership Position? Do you know what to do?

We all knot that the Scouts run our Troop. If you hold a leadership position in the troop, be it Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, or an appointed position, you have a direct effect on how well the troop runs. Find out what each position's duties are, so you can "lead the way"!

LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR SCOUTS

Scouts who have been elected to leadership positions (Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader), or appointed to other leadership positions must  take part in a special Junior Leader Training program, run by the Scoutmaster every six months.

Junior Leader Training (or JLT, as it is commonly known) gives Scouts the skill they need to lead their patrols or troop. The course is usually run on a Saturday or over a weekend.

Advanced Training
Scouts wanting advanced training should ask their Scoutmaster about District and/or Council JLT opportunities.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR SCOUTERS

The Boy Scouts of America's new Basic Leader Training program is the culmination of more than two years of work by professionals and volunteers from throughout the nation. Their goal was to revise and update the volunteer leader training materials for the Boy Scouts of America. The result is a seamless training program that helps leaders easily graduate through the courses quickly and with little duplication.

The package begins with Fast Start training, continues through New Leader Essentials, and is followed by Leader Specific Training for each adult's role in the unit. Youth Protection Training and Safe Swim Defense/Safety Afloat are also key components, and can be completed online.

Here is a brief overview of the components of the training continuum.

Youth Protection Training

BSA Youth Protection Training is now required for at least one adult present during any event or activity needed a local or national tour permit.  Further, every adult participating in nationally sponsored events and activities must be trained in BSA Youth Protection. Fast Start Training
Fast Start training is the first step for any new volunteer and is to be delivered immediately after a new leader registers and before he or she meets with any youth member. It is a 60 minute video presentation, which can be checked out from Mr. Keany. You can also do the Fast Start Training ON-Line.

Safe Swim Defense/Safety Afloat - A must when going into the water

Basic Leader Training
The new Basic Leader Training comprises two parts: New Leader Essentials for all unit-level leaders and Leader Specific Training, which is based on the leader's unit-level position. Committee Members have a specific training class they attend, while Scoutmasters have a training program that includes two meetings and an outdoor session.

Advanced Training
Advanced training opportunities exist, including an Advance Outdoor Leader Skills program and the new Wood Badge course

What Makes a "Trained" Leader?

Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

Troop committee members are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials and the Troop Committee Challenge as their Leader Specific training.

The Troop committee requires that ALL adult leaders be trained before they work with Scouts.
