Camping and Boy Scouts

Boy Scouting is designed to take place in the outdoors. It is in the outdoors that Scouts share responsibilities and learn to live with each other. Troop 993 encourages this through our participation and attendance in an active camping program. Just look at our Calendar!

This page was written for second year Webelos, first year Boy Scouts, and their parents. The information presented here and on the links provided on this page are meant as a guide in preparing a young Scout and his parents for Boy Scout camping.

Scout Camping Equipment List

The first thing any Scout needs is gear, lots and lots of gear. Right?  Actually, No. No one needs that much gear for a weekend of camping. Except of course, Scout Leaders! They always seem to be in a battle of who can have the newest, coolest, lightest, neatest, prettiest, etc.. gear on every campout.

The Outdoor Mantra: Layering, Layering,  Layering

Any campout has the potential to be a disaster if the camper does not dress properly for the weather, (whatever the weather may be). A Scout must always pack for and know how to properly wear clothes while camping.

Map and Compass

Now that we have all this cool gear and we know how to dress.... Lets take a look at basic map and compass skills. After all, we want to return from our campout... Don't we??

Working with Rope

Now that we know what to buy, what to wear, how to wear it and how to find our way. What are we going to do when we get there?

Why, tie knots of course...That's a basic Scout skill that everyone should know. The link below will take you to an animated knots page. Use your browser's back command to return to this page.
